6 Tips to Organize User's Manuals

When you buy things like cars, electrical appliances, garden items, and any kind of electricity, they come with user manuals. Some come as paper, while others can be found online. These manuals are very important to understand the functionality and maintenance that goes with the purchased product.

Quick and easy access is required if you need information about an item. There are different schools of thought for editing user manuals. Like anything in life, what works for a person does not mean that it will work for everyone. Think about the different options listed here, and decide which idea or combination of ideas will work best for you.

You may be wondering why I suggest that a combination of ideas can work better for you. In the past when I talked about the first step in the planning process, which brings things together, this idea is how you should edit your user manuals. I still agree with the idea of combining the same things, but perhaps in different visual environments.

For example, all the furniture manuals I use except for the plastic folder on the shelf in my garage. Another example is, the instructions for my tv, DVD player, and cable tv are all integrated into the cabinet where my tv sits. So, the idea of keeping things together is true, but in different physical environments. All other manuals that I do not have access to regularly, are stored in folders in my closet.

See the list below for options and manual editing tips for your user.

Keep manuals where you use the item for quick and easy access. This makes sense in car manuals as most people keep them in their glove boxes.

Keep paper user manuals in a hanging folder in your refill tote or closet. Use the dividers in the folder by categories such as electrical items, outdoor, electrical items, etc.

Alternatively, you can save digital manuals, and/or links to websites for digital manuals using the same sections you use in the paper manuals, for consistency. Evernote is a very efficient application for storing and organizing files of all kinds, paper and electronic and you will be able to access them anywhere at any time with a smartphone.

Attach the receipt, then mark the purchase date and model number in advance to make it easier to solve the problem.

If you change an item, reuse the old user manual.

Keep all home user manuals in a folder together and place the folder on top of the kitchen counter when exiting the home sale.
